Never Satisfied!

I can not believe all the negative comments I am hearing today about the BET Awards. This just goes to show that my people are never satisfied with anything. Michael's death came very unexpectedly leaving only a matter of 3 days for the BET Awards staff to rearrange their entire show that was previously scheduled, to become a tribute show for the late Iconic Michael Jackson. We were told on numerous occasions that there would be tributes paid to MJ and as far as what I witnessed that is exactly what we got. The show opened with New Edition doing a medley of Jackson 5 songs which was how MJ began his career. Then we were introduced to the host Jamie Fox who throughout paid homage to the fashions of Michael Jackson. Everyone is asking about the tribute to MJ. People everyone or nearly everyone who got on the stage last night paid some sort of tribute to MJ. Whether it was in song, by acceptance, by fashion statements, by providing fond memories ,etc I saw a group of African American people gather and pay tribute to the "Gloved One", himself. Were there problems with the show,Yes ,what did you expect in three days time. We spend so much time complaining about our people that we end up missing the beauty. Keep in mind if we complain then everyone else will complain, then what? Once again we are back to a lack of representation and wondering why it happens!!! Support is the name of the game people and we could all do it more often....

BET Awards the Day After

This morning as I reflect on last night's BET Awards I can't help but to think about a comment made by Joe Jackson, the father of Michael Jackson, where he stated the tribute to Michael was great but it would have been better if it would have been done before Michael passed so he would have been around to see it. This statement is very true and I'm sure its weighing heavily on the hearts of many right now.

One things for sure we can not change the past but what we can do is from this day forward prevent this from happening again. This is what I believe the people at the BET awards set out to do by changing the regularly scheduled Bet Awards to an all out Tribute to King of Pop.

The show lasted nearly four hours but I must say I was entertained the entire way through. Jamie Foxx did a great job hosting the show from the start to the ending. It was stated that the show was going to be a celebration of Michael's life and that it definitely was as shown by the ,"keeping it real language, and shows of alcohol, just like at any other celebration. Although there were highlights throughout the show some of the moments that stood out most to me were the performance by Neyo singing Lady in my Life, BVD going old school with Poison, Jamie Fox with his Michael wardrobe, and who can forget the stirring words from Michael's baby sister.

Overall the show was great and it was very nice seeing so many of my favorite artist come together for a great cause. One things for sure Michael will forever live in out hearts and I want to thanks the BET Awards for paying tribute to a legend.

Happy BET Awards Day!

I know that maybe in the past the BET award have been plagued with fighting and black people behaving foolishly, but this years BET awards will means so much more. A couple friends I know say they haven't watched the awards in years or pretty much anything that comes on BET because it does not represent black people in the best light. I personally think its not the BET awards that shows us in a negative manner but it's the individuals that attend the awards and decide to honor the awards for which they are given with a negative depiction. The BET awards show is one of the only remaining awards show that honors African American.

A couple days ago when watching the best moments of the past BET awards I found myself overwhelmed with emotions. I remembered every last moment and how seeing each made me feel. Who can forget when Monique and the big girls danced to Beyonce, when James Brown performed and Michael Jackson came out, when we listened to the old school medley, or when Rick James let the girl backstage know ,"I'm Rick James Bitch"!

I don't know what will happen at this year's BET Awards but what I do know is if it's anything like the past episodes it will give me once again an everlasting memory and make me proud of my people. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for the BET Awards!

FASHION EVERCHANGING

Urban Who?

When I thought of coming up with a blog where I discussed Urban fashions and issues pertaining to urban fashions I had no idea it would be so difficult. What I have found most difficult is finding fashion pictures that represent people of different nationalities. I wanted to showcase inexpensive trendy swimsuits in my blog and could not find one picture to post of a African American wearing a swimsuit. I'm not sure what was more shocking to me at the time; the fact that I could not find the picture or the fact that I had never noticed it before. From this day forward I vow to try my best to represent Urban fashion to the fullest and to all genres. I guess we are often so busy tearing each other down we forget how to build each other up.

Off The Wall

As I think back to my earliest childhood memories of Michael Jackson I still cant believe that he is gone, but the memories I have will definitely live forever. Growing up as the 8Th child of 9 we never had a lot of money but as a family we made it. I can remember being maybe 5 or 6 years old and one day I came home from school and my mother had done her best to rearrange our apartment. She was a huge Michael Jackson fan and used the colors that he wore most (red, white and black) at the time to decorate the place. The main wall in the living room was covered in glass so what my mother did was take maybe 25 of the Michael Jackson album covers and cover the walls. It was pretty much an entire tribute to the pop icon. The albums started out from his childhood and ended with his latest album which at the time was "Off The Wall". As we took time to look around at my mothers latest creation she put on his latest album and my brother and i began to sing and dance around. Now that I think about it my mother was feeling very happy that day with her latest decorating project and the alcoholic beverages she had afterward as an ode to her latest creations. From that particular day forward anytime my mother would have someone over to the house she would call on my brother and I to come out and sing and dance to the Michael Jackson tunes. We would always go to the front of the mirrored wall covered with the Michael Jackson album covers and sing and dance our hearts out. As we got better with our performances my mother bought us both the imitation jacket and glove that Michael wore. We did this routine for years and neither my brother nor I will ever forget the joy it brought to the people around us, or the joy we felt when my mother showed off her Michael Jackson decorating skills.

United By Tragedy

I could not believe it when my coworker sent me an instant message that read ,"Michael Jackson has died"! I immediately went to the web and felt an ounce of hope as they stated he was rushed to the hospital and it had not been confirmed that he was dead. For the next half hour I prayed that this was just the media making up some ugly vicious rumors. Within an half hour it had been confirmed by 99 percent of the news media that the person once known as the epic Entertainer Michael Jackson was no longer.

I could not even begin to put into words the overwhelming rush of emotions I immediately felt. I hadn't been this emotional since Barack Obama was voted president. This was a different kind of emotion though this caused a pain that hurt me deep within my soul. Michael was not my family but the pain I felt was that of loosing a family member.

You just never expect for something of this magnitude to happen. The passing of Michael Jackson is worst than anything I could ever imagine and once again in an instance, we are a nation united by tragedy. Today for the first time maybe ever I feel as though I can go up to any individual of any nationality and discuss the loss of a legend. On very few occasions can we all relate to the same pain we are all now feeling. Michael we will miss you, but your spirit and music will forever live on....

The Thoughts I Have

Frugal, Flirty, n Fab readers I have to confess that sometimes some of the thoughts I have are absolutely insane. What I wonder most is if others have these same random thought or are they simply my own. When I arrived at work today I notice that one of my coworkers was dressed down in jeans which was weird because its Thursday and not Casual Fridays. When I asked her why she was dressed down she informed me that she would be cleaning out the storage room because of the bugs that were now flying around in there. This was a little strange because we have an exterminator that comes out but for some strange reason (recession) she was going to clean the room out while the maintenance guy sprayed for the bugs. At about 10:30 I went up to my coworker to have little talk with her about what we would be having for lunch today and I couldn't help but to notice the strong aroma of bug spray. My coworker then stated," I wonder if inhaling too much bug spray would help you loose weight". I replied," if you can make it as far as even skipping lunch for today I will pick up two cans for myself tonight". People Please pray for me and don't forget my coworker too, but the fact of the matter is that today many have done worst to loose weight and in the end suggestion is simply just a though.....

Which Type of Shopper are You

I have come to learn from years of experience that at any given time in our lives we can all be classified as one of the below types of shoppers. Which one relates most to you?

Thrifty Shopper- This is the type of person that thrives at the thought of there being a sale or some sort of special discount. It really doesn't matter what the items are that on sale, a thirst is quenched just by making the purchase. A sign that you may be a thrifty shopper is when you purchase 10 different color T shirts because they were on sale for 4.99 each, or you have multiple items in your closet that you know you will never wear but simply bought them because of the sale price. The thrifty shopper will sometimes even buy items that are slightly damaged just because of the extra discount they may receive.

Name Brand Whore- This is the person who thrives off making name brand purchases even though most times they can't afford them. This is the person who will avoid getting the black dress they can actually afford for the Betsy Johnson designer dress although the more affordable of the black dresses is cuter. You will never see this person out without some sort of name brand item and all to often all name brand items. A sign that you just might be a name brand whore is if you go through your closet and you have very few item but they are all name brand and you are satisfied with what you see then you fall into this category.

Impulse Shopper- This happens to be my favorite type of shopper and at times this is what i mostly consider myself. This is the type of shopper who shops often and makes a purchase based on her likes and dislikes. She is a combination of the thrifty shopper and the name brand whore. When she shops and finds an item that she likes and looks goon on her she makes the purchase. Whether the item is on sale or a name brand means absolutely nothing to this shopper. If you go through your closet and find that you have a mixture of everyday chic item mixed with some designer names you fall into this category. the impulse shopper simply buys based on her likes and dislike.
