Half the Sky!

Thursday night I had the pleasure of attending the Half the Sky Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide screening at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami Florida and to say it was an eyeopening documentary would be an understatement. Half the Sky is the landmark series created by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristol and Sheryl Dunn follow six actress-advocates Diane Lane, America Ferrera, Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde as the travel to six countries meeting inspiring women who are confronting oppression and developing meaningful economic solutions through health care, education, and economic empowerment.

Eva Mendes investigates gender based violence in Sierra Leone, a country where most of the assaults and rapes go unreported.

Gabrielle Union visits Vietnam where she meets Nhi a 14 year old girl who is the primary bread earner in her home put to work daily by her father selling lottery tickets and the sacrifices made daily to get an education from the Room to Read Organization.

Diana Lane investigated maternal mortality in Somaliland where one in ever 12 women dies in childbirth due to poor nutrition and female genital mutilation.

Meg Ryan traveled to Cambodia to investigate issues of sex trafficking where 30 percent of the prostitutes are children.

America Ferrera traveled to India where it is estimated that 90 percent of sex workers' daughters follow their mothers into prostitution and of the three million prostitutes in the country, 1.2 million are children.

At the conclusion of the screening Actress Gabrielle Union answered audience questions and spoke indepth about her personal experiences, what made her want to take part in such a  powerful documentary and also what can be done to assist with the economic empowerment of women.

I left the Half the Sky screening knowing that Gabrielle's inside was even more beautiful than what we see on the core.

For the Half the Sky screening being such a fan of Gabrielle's style I knew I wanted to keep my look Chic, Sassy, and Sophisticated so I went with this beautiful baroque print shirt and pencil skirt from JCPenny!

I completed my look with nude pumps, gold accessories, nude clutch and a pink pout!
